Summer boost for village green BY GRACE CABELL Merivale’s village green will have a strong community look about it this summer. Coin-operated barbecues, petanque and new seating may all be on the cards. The Merivale Precinct Society is working with the city council to bring new life to the Merivale Village Green, in front of The Brewers Arms, beside the Christchurch Chinese Methodist Church. The group has been backed by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board to beautify the

green and provide a new space for the community. After the society’s deputy chairwoman Denise Leighs found the city council had no money for funding, she decided to take matters into her own hands. “Edgeware Village have had large planters put in by the city council, but they’ve run out of funding for us and are wanting community groups like ours to lend a hand. So we’ve proposed to do all our own designs and costings, and put in planting,” she said. •Turn to page 2

Bid to improve intersection safety takes a step forward

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Dogs on leashes

The city council is urging people who exercise dogs along Waimairi Walkway to make sure they are on a leash. Animal control team leader, Mark Vincent, said there had been a number of complaints about dogs running free. He said the walkway area was clearly marked as one where animals needed to be controlled by a leash. Anyone found with a dog that was not on a leash would be subject to an instant fine of $200 for breaching the Dog Control Bylaw 2008. Rangers would be increasing patrols and extra signs would be installed.

BY GRACE CABELL

Residents worried about an intersection in St Albans may finally see action. More than 570 signatures have been gathered in a bid to install right-turning arrows at the Cranford St and Innes Rd intersection. Christchurch Central electorate candidate Tony Milne (inset) led the petition while doorknocking for his campaign. This Wednesday he will be presenting a deputation to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board, aimed at changing the intersection. “I’m not a traffic engineer so can only reflect on what the community wants but obviously there is a very strong feeling about it because it’s a very dangerous intersection,” he said. After looking at feedback from the petition, Mr Milne said many of the participants said they had almost been in accidents, or had witnessed accidents at the intersection themselves. “They also talked about having to wait for four or five changes of lights before having to turn.

Quake recovery

Staff from EQC, the city council consents department, Tonkin and Taylor engineering consultancy and community representatives are offering information sessions related to earthquake recovery and residential rebuild this month. The sessions are being held at Beulah Church, in Springfield Rd, on weekdays from October 6 to 16. Morning sessions will run from 9am till noon and afternoon sessions from 4pm to 7pm Monday to Wednesday. More information can be found here https://intheknow.org.nz/.

Specsavers

In the past year Specsavers Papanui has raised more than $2250 for local charity, Heart Kids Canterbury and The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. The Papanui optometrist has been donating a portion of sales from every pair of glasses sold to Heart Kids Canterbury. The funds have assisted it to provide travel subsidies for Starship trips, hospital gift packs, cardio youth events and education evenings. Specsavers Papanui has also helped The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ with its overseas outreach programmes with 5981 sight-restoring surgeries performed last year.

Parents concerned over roundabout BY GRACE CABELL

Parents are concerned about the safety of a roundabout situated directly outside of St Albans School. The roundabout sits at the intersection of Westminster St, Courtenay St, and Roosevelt Ave. While doorknocking for his campaign as Christchurch Central electorate candidate, Tony Milne found that many parents were worried about the roundabout and crossing area. More than 500 pupils cross here each day to get to school. Mr Milne will present results of a survey with feedback from residents to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board on Wednesday. Community board chairman Mike Davidson said it would be good to see the survey results so the board could look at all sides of the issue. It’s one thing if you’ve got to wait a couple set of lights but it’s another thing all together if there is danger to school kids,” he said. Mr Milne said through his survey he noticed a lot of parents in the area said the roundabout was dangerous. “I was actually driving down that street with a passenger in my car, and I was talking about how dangerous it was and I almost had a crash there,” he said. Results from the survey showed

BEFORE AND AFTER: Before barriers were installed last month there were often complaints about fishers in the no fishing zone on New Brighton Pier. That has improved since.

Barriers installed to curb fishing on pier BY GABRIELLE STUART

Desperate measures may not be needed to solve issues with fishers at the New Brighton Pier, thanks to barriers installed last month. The city council was considering a blanket ban on fishing at the pier, because of the numbers of people fishing in the no fishing zones. During busy times, visitors were not able to reach the end of the pier because it was so

crowded with people fishing. But instead of a ban, the city council trialled barriers around the no fishing zone last month. Burwood-Pegasus Community Board member Tim Sintes said they were proving effective. He said there had been big crowds at the pier recently, but fishers seemed to be respecting the boundaries. “I think people know it is the last resort before we take some real serious steps, so they are respecting it.”

BUy DIREcT FROM ThE MANUFAcTURER

He said that before the barriers were installed people often said they didn’t realise they had stepped into the no fishing zone. “Now they don’t have that excuse.” The measures will be reviewed this summer, and if the problem becomes worse other options will be looked at. Those include fencing the fishing area, banning some types of fishing, and creating a separate fishing platform attached to the pier.

people had mixed reactions. “Some wanted a pedestrian crossing installed and some recommended an island to cross and wait on,” he said. The roundabout was on the city council’s list before the earthquakes, but with many other new issues it had become less of a high priority. “It’s especially important when you’re talking about safety and the safety of children. Often with these things you wait until it’s too late and an accident has already happened, so why not do that before hand,” said Mr Milne.

NOR’WEST NEWS

Living below the breadline to raise Last week Canterbury University student Hannah Rhodes spent five hungry days living below the poverty line spending only $2.25 per day to eat. Her aim was to raise money for global sex trafficking victims through sponsors. Reporter Grace Cabell spoke to her about her motivation and her involvement in nonprofit organisations. Hannah, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Sure, I’m in my fourth year at Canterbury University. I’m particularly interested in issues of social justice and human rights which I’ve really become more involved with throughout my time at the university. Have you always lived in Christchurch? Yes I have. I grew up in Avonhead and went to Riccarton High School. Why did you decide to get involved with charity organisations? I’ve been involved with various charities throughout school and university. I’ve noticed there are a lot of charities out here in New Zealand but none with a specific focus on sex trafficking. That was when I really started getting interested in that. I think people see it as something that doesn’t involve New Zealand, but research shows a huge amount of New Zealand men participating in sex trafficking overseas. It’s really a wider gender equality issue. So what organisations are you involved with? This year there was the opportunity to run an arts internship, so I took that up. There are seven

interns and 20 volunteers who are part of The Abolitionist Society. The aim of this is basically to raise awareness for sex trafficking. I was actually contacted about it by Daniel Walker – the founder of Nvader, a group which aims to free victims of sex trafficking. What does The Abolitionist Society do? We had a week where we had a range of events each day. We held an art exhibition, Nvader founder Daniel Walker spoke, we had a debate about sex trafficking and a quiz night to raise money and awareness. When did you begin to get involved with Nvader? Well the Canterbury University political science department hosted Nvader at the start of the year, which was something which I organised. Then we branched out and created The Abolitionist Society.

Some of the members in that have worked overseas; one in Muldova and one in South Africa and India. They were both working against sex trafficking, so we have quite a lot of experience between us. Hannah, what motivated you to ‘live below the line’? It’s just a really small thing that I can do. When you look at sex trafficking, it’s one of the most severe human rights violations I can think of. So, yeah, for me it’s a really small thing. Tear Fund is the charity that raises money for Nvader and what they’ve done is made a targeted list of the campaigns across New Zealand. So basically you just sign up and it’s all done for you. I think it’s a really effective way rather than asking for money. So a day living below the line. What is it like? I have had some porridge for breakfast. I’m tired though. I have two dinners to go to this week which will be the most difficult thing. Generally really tired … the main thing is resisting walking past the fridge. I’m planning a big batch of vegetable soup for lunch. Hopefully, that will wake me up. Honestly the hardest thing is going without sugar, the cravings.

EATING PORRIDGE: Hannah Rhodes is living off $2.25 a day to raise money for sex trafficking victims.

They are (from left): Kendra Titheridge, Samantha Kidby, Maria Joyce, Hannah Smith, Hannah Rhodes, Mikaela Ruegg, Becca Ottinger and Abigail Egden. How much have you raised so far? So far I’ve raised about $1330. It’s only taken about a month which is cool. I just encouraged small amounts but I found when people started reading into it they donated more. So far as a group we have raised $8000 for Nvader. I think we have also convinced 20 people to join, which is great as there are only actually eight people in the society itself. What was it about this issue that stood out to you? Look, there are now more slaves in the world than there ever has been before. It’s a really big issue and it’s just crazy that

people in New Zealand don’t know about it. Is there anyone out there who inspires you, or that you look up to? I think at the moment I’ve been really impressed by the things Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie have been doing around gender equality. Sex trafficking overly disproportionally effects women so I think celebrities going out of their way and celebrities using networking to portray a message is awesome and needs to be done more. What are some of your other interests? Well, I actually just got a sumO

mer scholarship which I’m really excited about. It’s to help Linda Cruse to start up a non-profit organisation. She looks at disaster zones, in terms of natural disasters. She has done work in the Philippines, Pakistan earthquakes … she’s really amazing and we’re lucky to have her in Christchurch. So what’s next for you? I’m looking to grow the society into a non-profit organisation nationally and expanding it out so students all over New Zealand can get involved. We’re planning to make the affiliated society next year … it’s an idea at the moment but it is definitely

incident on a still day, required six fire trucks and a tanker. We are also in school holiday time when idle young hands tend to increase the number of vegetation fires. The combination with nor’west winds could well prove lethal. Last Thursday was unusual for the airport with two fire calls to incidents involving planes. The first at 10.58am involved

A fire in a hedge in the Horotane Valley last Sunday morning is a reminder that we are now firmly into fire season. Dry foliage, coupled with a strong wind meant the fire ripped through a 120m hedge and started to spread. What would be a one truck

the spillage of a drum in the cargo area. This turned out to be leather cleaner so presumably the cargo hold now sparkles, and smells a little like an old English study. The second call was to another plane at 11.42am. Again investigation proved this to be benign but passengers that may have been exposed had to be kept isolated until the substance involved was identified.

Inconvenient, I’m sure but with the threat to the whole world now very real, it was a precaution I’d like to think we all understand. A dishwasher starting to smoke in a house in Halswell Rd on Tuesday is a reminder that any electrical appliance can catch on fire while operating and being in the house, as the occupants were in this case, can prevent a nuisance turning to a disaster.

Store manager Debbie Coulter has already gained considerable experience in the natural health and beauty industry, having managed three health shops in Wellington. She is assisted by Jenny Pierce, who previously worked at the original Homestead Health and Beauty in New Brighton. Jenny says, many former customers from that store have been very pleased to find the new store at The Palms. he Canterbury Collections and Awards took place at The Tannery on October 3. The show was the culmination of Propellor Property Investments Fashion Beauty Week, which included an opening cocktail party and a model search. Leading labels and brands were represented by the models who walked the long runway of the arcade. In keeping with the theme for the evening Moulin Rouge, opera and cabaret singers, along with lithe dancers, brought continental chic to the already sophisticated event, delighting the large and appreciative audience. i, my name is Rose Grieve and I am a Barnardos KidStart Childcare Consultant for Canterbury and Canterbury North. I love my job and I am really excited about having this opportunity to introduce and promote Barnardos KidStart Childcare home-based services. My story starts as a mum working and juggling childcare through daycares and kindies. Until my two beautiful children came along, I was a kindergarten teacher. I wanted to stay at home with my children so I found employment that fitted my circumstances – Tupperware, where I worked for 14 years as a manager. If only I knew about being a homebased educator. Now that my children have grown up, I’m back to full-time work by recently joining this wonderful and passionate team at Barnardos KidStart Childcare. My husband and I love Christchurch and believe there is no better place to be. The people are so friendly and there is nothing better than the heart and soul of a community. In the last 12 years, we have contributed our time to our local youth group, which has been so rewarding. It is great to get involved in my local community and have the opportunity to support families to find that perfect home away from home childcare. When we meet with the parents, we are looking for the

perfect educator, match to capture the family’s needs. If the circumstance fits, we are here to help mums become educators, setting themselves up so they are able to work from the comforts of their own home, where they will provide care and education incorporating Barnardos KidStart Childcare’s philosophy of learn, play and grow.

It is great to get involved in my local community and have the opportunity to support families to find that perfect home away from home childcare. If you are looking for childcare or thinking about becoming an educator and running your own business from the comforts of your own home, we may have the perfect opportunity for you. Give me a call as I would love to help you with your childcare journey. Call 0800 KIDSTART today.

Looking for Childcare? At Barnardos KidStart Childcare we understand that your child needs a safe and nurturing environment to learn, play and grow. We offer both centre and home based childcare so you can make the right choice for your family. Barnardos, trusted in your community for over 40 years.

ids have great parties at Chipmunks Wigram. Chipmunks Wigram is proving a popular venue with families returning to repeat the experience. Those returning from last year are enjoying the upgraded playground. The older children are enjoying the new seven-metre inflatable slide. The younger children are fascinated by the LED slide and enjoy rolling on the waterbed. While “pay to play” is very popular, many children choose to celebrate their birthdays at Chipmunks Wigram. Once the venue is booked, parents only need to manage the guest list and organise the birthday cake. That’s unless they choose a yummy Chipmunks’ ice cream cake – great for children on hot summer days. Parents enjoy parties at Chipmunks Wigram as they have time to socialise with family and other parents, without the pressure of hosting at home. They choose their party duration, and guests still enjoying themselves can stay on till closing time. This summer, Chipmunks Wigram is offering a free helium birthday balloon for the birthday child at all birthday parties booked from November to January – an added incentive to have your party at Chipmunks Wigram.

any of our graduates are offered full-time positions once they have completed their training, but for Jessica Graham this is just the start of her journey in Pharmacy. One that will see her move through to Pharmacy Technician training once she graduates in February 2015. Tutor Barbara Colville is impressed with the standard of all this year’s students and is able to confidently recommend to employers for future employment. Jessica had a passion for Pharmacy while still at Lincoln High School, so it was a

natural move for her to enrol in the course once she left. Jessica is supported by Rolleston Pharmacy where she is undertaking the practical side of her training, one day per week in Work Placement. Colville is certain that on graduation, Jessica will be more than ready to undertake the next steps towards achieving her dream. New for 2015, Academy New Zealand is offering Retail Pharmacy Level 2 aimed at helping school leavers get onto the Pharmacy career ladder. Find out more about Academy call 0800 4 ACADEMY now, or check out pharmacy.school.nz.

he Parker Pen company has a powerful slogan. “A Parker Pen won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” Plans to market the pen in Mexico came unstuck when the translation wasn’t proofread before publishing. The correct Spanish word for ‘embarrass’ is ‘avergonzar’ but it was erroneously translated as ‘embarazar’. Thus, in Mexico the slogan, “A Parker Pen won’t leak in your pocket and make you pregnant” was published. “Proofreading can be tricky,” says Brian Morris, Principal at New Zealand institute of Business Studies. “That’s why publishers often ask us for proofreaders who are competent in two languages.” Another blooper happened when the Pepsi slogan, “Come alive with the Pepsi generation” was translated into Taiwanese, “Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead.” Readers who are interested in becoming professional proofreaders or book editors are invited to get the free information pack which explains the one year training process. Phone: 0800 801 994, or email: principal@nzibs.co.nz.

e v i t a e Making dreams Cr energy a reality By Larissa McMillan

A

li Phillips has always known what her dream job would be. Through Aoraki Polytechnic, she has been able to take the first steps along the path to making this a reality. Studying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus, Ali is currently completing her second year of hairdressing, a Certificate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3). “i have always wanted to be a hairdresser since i was a little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “i had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll’s hair and been generally fascinated with hairdressing.” With no experience in the industry, and having to balance study and the needs of her family, 26-year-old Ali found the perfect fit at Aoraki. “i’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs,” says Ali. The Level 3 full-time course runs over 34 weeks. it is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques. “This year and last year have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “i have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.”

I wa qual nt a if that ication i likel s most y to me a get job... GREAT OUTCOMES and further study pathways

Ali Phillips For Ali the most rewarding part of her study is the increase in her confidence levels, and learning how to interact with the general public on a professional level. Aoraki Polytechnic’s tutors are involved and respected in the industry, and provide invaluable links for students to the industry itself. Ali is creating a portfolio of her work, which will play an important role when seeking an apprenticeship next year to complete her three-year qualification. Students are encouraged to aim high, with Ali intending to follow her apprenticeship with a full-time hairdressing position. “My long term ambition is to open my own salon,” says Ali. Qualifications in hairdressing are available at Aoraki Polytechnic’s Timaru, Dunedin and Christchurch campuses. Visit www.aoraki.ac.nz or call 0800 426 725 for more information on getting your career underway.

hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she looked into studying at The Learning Connexion, the school of art and creativity based in Wellington, which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-from-home part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My lifelong ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it, to enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas,” says Anne Bannock. Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, artist Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is a converted cowshed, which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone i have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. i have met some students when i attended a block class and now i follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” if you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

his charming family home is situated on a private rear section sited for the sun. My owners have had 19 happy years here and are only moving to downsize. Faithfully maintained and meticulously presented with three good double bedrooms and sun-filled conservatory leading onto a stunning open plan living room with wonderful timber feature ceiling. With a modern kitchen and bathroom plus the added bonus of a completely detached studio. Ideal for the artist in the family or perhaps to work from home or as a teenager’s retreat/sleep out. A good double garage and off-street parking for up to six cars complete the picture for this lovely family home. My owners have purchased and want to see a SOLD sticker on the sign, on or before auction day. Auction: Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 1pm (unless sold prior). Open Home dates: Sunday, October 5, 2.30 pm to 3pm; Wednesday, October 8, 2.30pm to 3pm; Saturday, October 11, 2.30pm to 3pm; Sunday, October 12, 2.30pm to 3pm; Wednesday, October 15, 2.30pm to 3pm; and Saturday, October 18, 2.30pm to 3pm. To arrange a private viewing, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.

he answer could be as close as the exclusive Hawthorne Park Estate. This home is significantly more than a simple lifestyle consideration. Approximately 330 square metres of home rests magnificently on the 11,910sqm botanical setting. Built in 1991, architecturally designed and well maintained. A major refurbishment and modernisation project has been completed and all cosmetic EQC repairs signed off: quality carpets, selected draperies, new decor, including tiles and an exterior makeover. The blend of living areas that comprises a lounge, separate dining, family room and conservatories offer elegant living. The family and guests are adequately catered for by five double bedrooms, master and the first guest bedrooms are oversized and complemented by en suites. The third bedroom enjoys the overflow of a games room/storage area and its own en suite. The two other double bedrooms have their own shared bathroom. There are five toilets, too. Country style kitchen with lots of storage has the laundry attached. Car lovers are catered for with an internal access double garage and separate threebay garage. The botanical garden setting of 11,910sqm has been carefully planted and lovingly nurtured to create a haven of rest and colour. The rain-fed lake is a picture and provides one of the many alternative “hideaway spots” for relaxation and reading. A colourful setting with selected mature trees and specimen shrubs. “A blaze of colour in the spring and summer”. There is so much

to admire about this unique property that only viewing will convince, then only owning will satisfy. Buyers price guide is from $1.36 to $1.44 million. NOR’WEST NEWS

Monday October 13 2014

David La Planche takes a break from his Australian circuit to return home with one show at the Hornby Workingmens Club this Friday (17th October).

Seniors! Warm up with THIS

He will perform the ‘Magnificent Seven’ (comprising Cliff Richard, Elvis, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Ricky Nelson, Bobby Darin) with special guest Peter Williams (ex Max Merritt & the Meteors) backed by some of New Zealand's top musicians. Tickets on sale now at the club office.

Choice of

two course lunch deal

David's musical career began at the age of 11, winning a talent quest in his home town of Waimate singing Buddy Holly's "Oh Boy". From here he formed his own bands, performing nightclubs, dances, cabaret shows, Caroline Bay Christmas carnivals and private functions throughout New Zealand. Opportunity beckoned in Australia with a variety of gigs including cabaret, RSL and leagues clubs. David appeared on Australia's number one music show, Brian Henderson's "BAND STAND" and other TV shows. He also entertained the American troops on "R n R" from Vietnam. The UK then beckoned. In London David won a talent quest which resulted in securing cabaret shows in Scotland, Germany, Italy and all over the UK. Returning to Australasia, David played a mixture of nightclubs, cabarets and toured his “Cliff Richard Tribute Show”. Other shows in his repertoire include "The Music Of Bobby Darin", "Cliff and Elvis, the Early Years", "6 of the Best Performing the Songs of Cliff Richard, Elvis, Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash". David particularly enjoys the work he does with children at schools and was a finalist in the Coca Cola NZ Music Awards in Auckland with his children's CD "A Hand Full Of Songs". David and his family now live in Sydney, Australia where David is working on his music career.
